Founded in Earlsfield in 2010, Úna Burke Leather emerged from a passion for creation and an unwavering ambition to make her vision real.
Rooted amongst the rugged, whispering woods of Knockvicar in the west of Ireland, Burke grew up immersed in the world of traditional crafts, learning its skills and values from a very young age. She later went on to study Fashion Design at the Limerick School of Art & Design (LSAD), where she refined her creative foundations. Seeking to deepen her expertise, Burke moved further afield to London, specialising in leatherworking through a Master’s degree in Fashion Artefact at the London College of Fashion from 2007 to 2009.
Úna Burke Leather specialises in crafting luxury leather accessories that are meticulously handmade by Burke herself in her studio, using traditional leather-working tools and time-honoured techniques. Her work is distinctive, defined by intricate and highly engineered construction methods that she has innovated and refined over many years of developing her practice and building her business.
Burke describes her bespoke creations as “contemporary armour,” a reflection of her intention to empower, protect, and strengthen the individuals who wear her striking, sculptural designs. Each piece embodies her vision of merging artistry with resilience, resulting in accessories that are as meaningful as they are beautiful.
The value of traditional handcrafting and leatherworking plays an essential role in Burke’s practice. Leatherwork has been passed down through five generations on her father’s side, while dressmaking has been preserved across five generations on her mother’s side. With such a rich lineage of artisanship, it is no surprise that the act of making holds profound significance for her.
She explains that “the process of utilising and nurturing heritage crafts is something that holds a special place” in her life. The techniques she employs have become second nature to her. So instinctive and grounding that the work itself feels therapeutic, enriching her daily life and contributing to a deeply fulfilling, holistic way of living.
The resilience of the human spirit is a powerful influence in Burke’s work. She is deeply moved by stories of strength, striving to evoke this sense of empowerment through her sculptural designs, using them as visual representations of endurance and inner courage.
Many of her pieces draw inspiration from medieval armour and military aesthetics, such as medals, holsters, and protective forms, symbolising both vulnerability and defence. Curiosity has also led her to explore medical devices, including prosthetics, to empower individuals who feel diminished or overlooked.
Burke‘s distinct style is shaped by her fascination with psychology, human behaviour, and the emotional narratives that shape our lives. She is someone who constantly questions the world around her, from the nature of the afterlife to the meaning of existence itself. As she explains, “you need darkness for light to exist,” a philosophy that beautifully echoes through the contrasts and complexities of her work.
Reflecting that when she first began her business 15 years ago, Burke says there were far fewer leatherworkers in both Ireland and the UK. From the very beginning, her mission was to demonstrate the untapped potential of vegetable-tanned leather. Showing the world that it could be so much more than the familiar handbags, shoes, and belts. She wanted to reveal leather’s beauty as a sculptural medium, capable of forming artworks that are not only visually striking but also wearable.
In recent years, she has noticed a welcome rise in the number of leatherworkers entering the industry. She wholeheartedly supports this growth. She views it as an encouraging sign, especially at a time when concerns arise about leather being replaced by synthetic alternatives that she believes may be more animal-friendly but are not more environmentally friendly due to high levels of plastic finishing, bondings and backings. For Burke, the increasing interest in leatherwork reinforces its relevance and ensures that this historic craft continues to evolve and inspire.
The support Burke has received from a wide and diverse audience since the very beginning has been nothing short of extraordinary. Over time, she has watched her customer base evolve, yet her work continues to resonate most strongly with bold, expressive individuals who are both fashion-conscious and unafraid to invest in pieces that carry depth and meaning. While Úna Burke Leather enjoys a loyal base of returning customers, many of whom are drawn back by the empowering energy her bespoke pieces give them. She also continues to attract new clients who are equally passionate about her work. People are particularly captivated by the strong, handcrafted aesthetic that defines Burke’s creations. Early last year, Burke received an unexpected Instagram direct message from Lady Gaga’s stylists, Chloe and Chenelle Delgadillo. What followed was a series of intense, back-and-forth discussions about creating a bespoke outfit for the megastar herself. With only two weeks’ notice, the initial reaction was a mix of excitement, panic, and determination, but Burke knew she could not let an opportunity of this scale pass by.
The stylists were first interested in a hooded body piece from Burke’s RE.TREAT collection, created during her Master’s at the London College of Fashion. Wanting to offer Gaga more flexibility for movement and performance, a hooded cape paired with a structured strapped dress was proposed. With the clock ticking, she and her team had to quickly source leather suitable for a high-shine finish. Approximately five leather skins were used to construct the ensemble, with countless hours devoted to hand-cutting each panel.
The days that followed were filled with sleepless nights, meticulous craftsmanship, and unwavering focus as Burke and her team pushed through to meet what felt like an impossible deadline, transforming a daunting brief into a show-stopping reality
Burke admits that one of the biggest challenges was creating a perfectly tailored fit for Lady Gaga without any in-person fittings. To ensure practicality and ease during a performance, she incorporated a lambskin panel with lacing down the back for sizing and a side-zip panel, allowing Gaga to get in and out of the dress quickly during showtime.
The aftermath of the collaboration was extraordinary. The outfit sparked a huge surge of attention across social media, leading to an immediate spike in website traffic, increased sales, and even enquiries from museums interested in acquiring her work. The opportunity not only elevated her brand but also showcased the craftsmanship and innovation at the heart of Úna Burke Leather.

Having worked with Úna Burke Leather for four years now, I found it truly rewarding to write this article. I deeply admire Úna’s strength, creativity, and remarkable talent. Beginning my journey at sixteen as a work-experience student and now having the opportunity to work with her on incredible projects, both inside and outside the studio, has been nothing short of amazing.
The hands-on experience I’ve gained has taught me so much and ultimately inspired me to pursue fashion in college. I am currently studying for a BA in Fashion Design at the National College of Art & Design in Dublin, now in my second year, and I absolutely love designing. Working with Úna has given me a confidence I carry with me into my studies, helping me navigate complex design ideas and theories.
I find myself reaching for leather as a material quite often now. While part of that comes from familiarity, I’m also genuinely proud to be so well educated in both the utility and beauty of leather at just 19 years old, something I owe entirely to Úna. In my college work, I enjoy exploring what leather can become, experimenting with techniques such as laser cutting and pushing the boundaries of the material.
I also love combining leather with other media. At the moment, for example, I’m working on a denim project that brings together selvedge denim, vegetable-tanned leather, and knitted cotton yarn. The versatility created by blending these materials results in a rich and exciting palette to design with.
To anyone considering a career in the creative industries, especially fashion, I would strongly encourage you to seek out real-world experience. Ask the so-called “silly” questions; they will guide and reassure you as you move forward in your creative journey.
